Trip Introduction

Upper Dolpo Trek is trekking to northern Dolpo region which is the most remote and least developed part of Nepal. Although a few anthropologists and geographers had explored the region, the entire district was closed to trekkers until 1989. Only then, the southern part of Dolpo (Lower Dolpo Trek) was opened to organized trekking groups. Geographically a southern extension of Tibet, Dolpo lies within the borders of the state of Nepal. Dolpo region situated between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range is the highest inhabited land of Dolpo.

The largest national park, Shey- Phoksundo National Park sustains an abundance of wildlife including Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep, the legendary elusive Snow Leopard and also treasures numerous varieties of flora and fauna. The vegetation, wildlife, rural setting, amiable people, cultural background and traditional values of Dolpo nurture the overall aspects of Nepal. The Himalayan pilgrimage and perseverance of religion sum up the strong belief of people all around the Dolpo region.

The hardy highlanders of Dolpo are traders, exchanging barley for Tibetan rock salt and they also take their yaks onto the Tibetan plateau during summer for grazing.  The region is self- sufficient to provide every traveler with fascinating sight and fantastic journey to the most remote parts that are still left to be discovered. The Upper Dolpo is one of the best reflection of how beautiful Nepal truly is.
